One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is one of the most famous novels in American literature, it also happens to be one of the most successful adaptations in American cinema. Nicholson turns in what I would consider his best work in a long list of incredible performances. His supporting cast isn't too shabby either. Louise Fletcher, Will Sampson, Brad Dourif, Christopher Lloyd, Danny Devito, William Redfield and Sydney Lassick turn in brilliant performances to help craft Milos Forman's beautiful vision for this classic tale of Man vs. The System.
The film is incredibly funny and at the same time stunningly compelling, heartwarming and sad. It combines these aspects so well that you're able to sympathize with characters throughout the film, hate Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher) and laugh along with the patients on the ward all while rooting for our hero McMurphy (Jack Nicholson.

I used to when I first saw this movie as a teenager, especially since I spent a few years in a mental institution as a teen. But I rewatched it recently and I feel completely different. Is she a good person? No. But is she the epitome of of evil? Also no. McMurphy is also not the hero people make him out to be. He was in prison for statutory rape, and is in the institution because he is lazy, lackadaisical, and doesnt want to be in the work camp. Again, hes there for statutory rape. Hes not crazy, hes using the instution as a way of getting out of having to be in prison. After being there for a few weeks, the psychiatrist tells him hes going to release him back to the state and directly after McMurphy pulls the stunt on the bus to get himself a longer stay at the institution instead of having to go back to prison. She treats him like a child because he acts like a child, having a tantrum of a baseball game and being obstinate. The way she treats them in group therapy is no different than the way I for the other patients were treated in group therapy. McMurphy is an agent of chaos, the grain of sand in the cog that throws everything off. Both McMurphy AND Ratched are responsible for Billys death at the end. McMurphy DID pressure him, and her comment where she threatens to tell his mother is her cruelest moment in the movie. Ratched is on power trip, is controlling and cold, but the real tragedy is that she THINKS shes doing the right thing by these patients. For me, the character Nurse Ratched isnt black and white and thats what makes her so interesting.
